DENVER— Anthropocene Institute sponsored this year’s student program at the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit 2022. Now in its twelfth year, the Summit offers a unique, three-day program aimed at moving transformational energy technologies out of the lab and into the market.

Anthropocene Founder discusses the promise of Solid-State Atomic And Fusion Energy (S-SAFE)

The Institute’s Founder, Carl Page, gave remarks at the student luncheon, sharing perspectives on Solid-State Atomic and Fusion Energy’s (S-SAFE) potential in solving climate disruption by eliminating reliance on fossil fuels.

He set the stage: the conflict in Ukraine has taught us that it is high time to stop buying expensive fossil fuels and use cheaper safer 24/7 alternatives. The problem is becoming more dire with droughts, worsening storms, more frequent floods, and record wildfires. As Page stated, “It would be crazy to allow greenhouse effects to accumulate for the benefit of the protected class, the fossil fuel industry.” And for those who fear the inevitable disruption caused by new technologies, he added, “We must not destroy Earth, because we are afraid of the unintended consequences of saving it!”

It's time to draw down to 280 ppm and give children a well-deserved 20-year warranty on climate. His solution: develop 24/7, weatherproof clean energy solutions that can be used to power even heavy industry. The first move should be to deploy advanced, water-free nuclear fission power plants. The second — and probably the most promising — is to commercialize S-SAFE, which unlike conventional fission technologies does not need to be regulated.

2022 marks the Centennial Anniversary of the discovery of S-SAFE, when in 1922 at the American Chemical Society, Irion and Wendt reported Helium production from exploding Tungsten wires. It's still used as an igniter for certain reactions. Since then, innumerable types of S-SAFE fuels, catalysts, ignition systems, theories and conjectures have been investigated. Innovative measurement tools have emerged, and new scientific research papers have been published in top-tier peer-reviewed journals. While replication has been limited, Pons and Fleischmann observed this reaction in steady state without exploding their catalyst in 1989.
